ABOUT THE PROJECT
YOLK is a pedagogical, social and artistic dance ongoing program focused on YOU through Hip Hop, House and Waacking, dances of the Street and Clubbing Scene.
We create space for each person’s IDENTITY, self-expression, always in relation with the COLLECTIVE, through a strong base on the community aspect and on the origins, knowledge and fundamentals of these dances.
The project combines TRANSMISSION through regular classes that foster technical, bodily and
cultural knowledge with experienced dancers from the scene, and through taking part in community events; RESEARCH through theory classes, one-on-one and group reflections and discussions addressing intersectional themes; and SOCIALIZATION through collective encounters, shared spaces and a human approach aiming to create a sense of community where everyone has a responsibility and takes a part in.
Based in Porto, YOLK starts in January of 2019 when Cata (Catarina Campos) and Mel (Melissa Sousa), dancers, choreographers, facilitators and researchers who are part of the scene and also working across the performing arts, gathered a group of people who wanted to learn with them.
These people we are going to mention next (which we are truly thankful for supporting and being present and contribution) were since the very start of the classes and continued showing up consistently through and after the pandemic:
Mariana Mota, Daniela Nogueira, Ruba Nemehkh, Margarida Porto, Orquidea Ribeiro, Ana Reis and Ivana Duarte.
(special shot out to Egle, Gabija and Leidymar!)
Having evolved over the years and knowing changes are inevitable, the project has expanded over the course of these past few years demanding new challenges.
We are proud to also share that Ana (Ana Reis) and Ivana (Ivana Duarte), as dance facilitators and part of the core management team.
There's a purpose to keep alive the importance that DANCE, and its fundamental connection to
MUSIC, as an essential way to understand and express who we are, what we go
through and what we stand for.
